Key Steps in Calculating Lightning Protection Using the Rolling Sphere Method:

  1. Determining the Sphere Radius: The radius of the sphere depends on the level of lightning protection, which is chosen based on the requirements of the IEC 62305 standard or similar standards. For example, for Protection Level I (highest level), the sphere radius is 20 m, for Level II it is 30 m, and for Level III it is 45 m, and for Level IV it is 60 m.

  2. Rolling the Sphere: The sphere is imaginatively rolled over all surfaces of the object. All areas that are not touched by the sphere are within the protection zone, while areas touched by the sphere require protection.

  3. Positioning Lightning Rods: At the points where the sphere touches the surface, lightning rods are positioned to protect against direct lightning strikes. These can include standalone lightning rods on concrete bases, rods, masts, or other protective structures.

  4. Creating the Protection Zone: Based on the placement of the lightning rods, the protection zone is defined. Diagrams, drawings, or plans are often used to illustrate areas that provide protection when the sphere is rolled over the structure.
